Zero Plastic Oceans aims to tackle ocean plastic pollution by collecting waste such as PET and HDPE from coastal areas and turning it into usable plastic flakes or pellets. The project employs local waste collectors and trains them to facilitate a more effective and efficient collection process.
Each year, Bangladesh generates between 800,000 to 1,000,000 metric tonnes of plastic waste. Of this waste, approximately 30% is recycled, meaning a large amount ends up in landfills or the ocean.
TRANSFORM is supporting Zero Plastic Oceans with the launch of a pilot programme in Kuakata focused on the collection of discarded fishing nets and PET bottles, using Coastal Interceptor Systems to capture plastic waste in rivers before it reaches the ocean. Data-driven optimisation is helping to predict plastic drift patterns, allowing for improved collection routes. The collected waste will then be transformed into valuable materials for various applications.
The project aims to collect 100 tonnes of plastic waste each month, which will help protect marine life, restore ecosystems, and safeguard ocean health.
