Brink is a research organisation that approaches complex challenges through the lens of ‘behavioural innovation’, combining behavioural science and innovation methodologies to identify and enable systems transformation.
Approximately a third of Africa’s 420 million youth are unemployed, and women are less likely to be in work than men. Africa’s formal economies are struggling to create the opportunities that are needed to help alleviate poverty levels. What’s more, they are also struggling to respond to people’s ambitions and energy to create a better future for themselves.
The informal economy in Kenya accounts for 24% of the country’s GDP and also employs five times more workers than the formal economy.
Brink worked with TRANSFORM to understand the current realities and future possibilities for the millions of entrepreneurial Kenyans who hustle to sustain livelihoods across the informal economy.
The project created co-designed recommendations for inclusive growth in Kenya’s informal economy, sharing insights and recommendations for a future that better supports women and young people in the informal sector.
TRANSFORM distributed the research through an event in Nairobi and through various owned digital platforms, with the goal of assisting leaders across policy and business to understand the informal economy and make changes that will ultimately improve livelihoods for informal workers.
