Single use plastic packaging is a significant contributor to climate change. 26,000 tonnes of single use plastic packaging ends up in landfill every day in India. Multi-layered packaging in the form of sachets or pouches is particularly detrimental to the environment as it is virtually impossible to recycle. 

In lower-income communities in urban slums, there is no formal waste management system which in turn leads to clogging of drains which can result in flooding. Alternatively, others burn the waste which leads to air pollution. Communities living near the ocean may dump waste along coastlines. The mixed garbage dumps usually at the entrances and exits of these communities can become a hotbed for diseases. 

To combat this problem, Refillable is providing a reuse, refill and return service which helps eliminate packaging as well as reduce costs. Refillable is a zero waste delivery platform which delivers consumer products without single use packaging. 

Currently, Refillable focuses on the home care category of handwash soap, dish wash soap and floor cleaner by providing a refill service where customers can refill their existing bottles without the use of any additional packaging. The service helps eliminate single use plastic, offers cost savings and is convenient for the customers. 

TRANSFORM is helping Refillable work with Unilever brands which will accelerate the impact. The initiative is also helping to fine tune the model which will become a commercially feasible template to replicate and scale across geographies.
