According to a United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) study, 79 percent of all plastic waste ever produced accumulates in dumps or the natural environment. Unsustainable waste management disproportionately affects low-income communities, where workers face hazardous conditions due to labour-intensive manual sorting.
TakaTaka Ni Mali (“Waste is Wealth”) is a woman-led enterprise which drives the creation of green jobs and promotes a circular economy through waste management.
With support from TRANSFORM, TakaTaka Ni Mali has introduced semi-automated machinery to enhance hygiene and efficiency in waste management. The project also provides business training, empowering “wastepreneurs” – particularly women – to take on greater roles in the sector.
