In Ghana, shea nut post-harvest processing is traditionally carried out over fires by women workers at home. They also need to travel long distances on foot with heavy loads to and from collection sites, limited by what their bodies can carry. This approach often results in inefficiencies, environmental impacts, and health risks for local communities.
The Savannah Fruits Company is working with women in local cooperatives to change that by modernising shea supply chains.
With TRANSFORM’s support, the Savannah Fruits Company has helped previously fragmented groups of individual women workers form 33 legally registered cooperative enterprises, representing a total of 39,762 members. This shift in structure has strengthened governance, the women’s collective bargaining power and access to business training and opportunities.
