Green Bean Manufacturing designs and creates agro-processing machinery and equipment for animal feed, coffee and spices in Ethiopia . Despite agriculture accounting for 80% of Ethiopia’s exports and employing an estimated 75% of the workforce, the sector lacks mechanisation and modern technologies, resulting in inefficient, labour-intensive, and unprofitable practices.
Green Bean saw an opportunity to change and modernise farming practices by manufacturing agro-processing equipment in southeastern Ethiopia, which reduces the high machinery import fees and supports the country’s economic transition and industrial growth.
Green Bean’s ‘Green Field’ project is offering Machinery-as-a-Service (MaaS) to help turmeric farmers increase their yields and profitability by providing them with access to machinery on a subscription basis – rather than buying the expensive equipment outright. The technology will increase productivity and add value to the product as the machinery handles the polishing, boiling, and slicing of the turmeric, which can increase the price of a single kilogram of turmeric by 3 to 4 times. This results in better income for farmers and their communities.
TRANSFORM’s support will enable Green Bean to start manufacturing the turmeric processing machinery. It is estimated that traditional farming methods result in a 25% loss of the product post-harvest. By utilising the machinery, it’s projected these losses will be reduced to 5%. TRANSFORM’s support will also help train farmers and the community on how to operate the technology.
