In Uganda, 600 tonnes of waste is disposed of every day and only 40% of plastic waste is collected for disposal. At the same time, 9.3 million young people are unemployed. Eco Brixs is on a mission to tackle both issues simultaneously.
Women, young people, and people with disabilities, who face scarce employment opportunities, can earn a living while mitigating the country’s plastic pollution crisis. Collectors are compensated for each kilogram of plastic they deliver to Eco Brixs’ collection sites. The collected plastic is sorted, cleaned, and processed into various products such as bricks, lumber, furniture, and PET flakes, which are either sold or used to manufacture new items.
Since its inception in 2017, Eco Brixs has recycled over 1,000 tonnes of plastic and provided income opportunities to more than 4,600 individuals. Apart from environmental and economic benefits, Eco Brixs has also established Uganda's first legally recognised union for plastic collectors, advocating for fair trade principles and improved working conditions.
TRANSFORM’s support will help Eco Brixs scale to recycle over 2,000 tonnes of plastic waste a year and create 3,500 additional jobs.
