Enabling Access to Sustainable Living & Climate Resilience through Off-Grid Refrigeration
Access to cooling technologies is an important component of energy access and climate change adaptation efforts under multiple SDGs, with a huge disparity between developed and developing nations with regard to the availability and affordability of household cooling technologies. Globally, across 54 high-impact countries, 1.09 billion people among the rural and urban poor are at high risk due to a lack of access to cooling (SE4ALL 2021). This is of particular concern in Sub-Saharan Africa, where 215 million people among the urban poor are at the highest risk from a lack of access to cooling within this decade.
The Sure Chill Company, incorporated in 2013, manufactures and distributes top class off-grid refrigerators powered by solar direct drive (SDD) technology and an innovative thermal storage unit that eliminates the need for a battery system. We are addressing the cooling technology access situation in Sub-Saharan Africa by working with commercial investors, non-governmental organizations, distributors, and development partners to scale access to our cooling solution that delivers sustainable impact. This project seeks to collaborate with stakeholders in sustainable living interventions to undertake the following activities:
- Support rural households in our target markets in Sub-Saharan Africa to improve their health and well-being by utilizing high efficiency, affordable, off-grid refrigerators to preserve fresh food for longer, save money, and impact lives.
- Enable rural agricultural entrepreneurs to enhance their livelihoods through productive-use applications of the refrigerators.
- Empower women in rural households through SDG2 by providing increased household food security and nutrition through affordable cooling services.
- Provide high efficiency, low emission cooling services that reduce environmental impacts of off-grid energy transitions through solar direct drive (SDD) technology and SureChill design.
