Kipaji Foundation is a registered CBO based in kibera slums
Mission to uplift the upcoming to high grade level
Vision to produce individuals who will strive to make the world a better place
Having been raised in the slums, life was not easy especially when it came to matters relating to the girl child and teenagers of both genders. As a teen one was already exposed to peer pressure, school dropouts case, sexual abuse, early teenage pregnancies, drug and substance abuse and other unhealthy living lifestyles. It came to our attention that the girl child was the one who was at a higher risk especially during their teenage years and this lead to a lot of talents going to waste or end up unused as some opted to early marriages. It is said that educate a woman and the whole nation is empowered. What about the boy child? What if we also give them the same opportunities that would engage their minds and talents too? That was how Kipaji Foundation was founded. Education for all. Talent nurturing for all.
Kipaji Foundation is a Community Based Organization (CBO) whose aim is to nurture talents by providing mental, physical and spiritual mentorship to our beloved brothers and sisters in the community. It was found in April 2019 and grew slowly but gained a wider number in 2020 where we were able to reach out to 50 teenagers. Our objectives are to nurture talents, instill good moral values, to guide our teenagers on the importance of education and achieving personal goals and to also ensure that they know the importance of providing safe and peaceful environments for both themselves and their surroundings.
As a foundation we can boast of a few achievements including having an increase in the number of teenagers in our programs, participating in a few competitions like Kibera Eight Town Awards (KETA) and attending talent nurturing platforms and interviews with TV stations like TV47. The foundation has also brought some benefits to the teenagers which include: accountability and time management skills, they have a conducive environment for study away from home, reduced number of children roaming aimlessly since some of them come and spend quality time in practicing for dance and drama which is their routine when they are not studying and trust from their parents and guardians has been the major factor since they know their children are safe with us. As a foundation we decided to focus more on children from Kibera first but with time we are hopeful that we will be able to stretch to the other slums too as a way of giving back to the society. We are also working on creating a website which is still a work in progress and we have already have a place for building a structure to sustain the foundation.
As an organization we are also faced by several challenges including majorly finance, revision and writing materials, costumes for our dance and acting classes, graphics art equipment and food packs during the program since some children come from families that cannot even afford a meal a day. We would like to see that no child misses school especially the girls because of lack of sanitary towels as this always brings a negative psychological effect on them.
If we get financial assistance in running the activities of the foundation that will be an added advantage to us since we will be able to have a well prepared year plan through our treasurer and also have a financial budget. We would love to pride ourselves as the foundation that brought a positive impact to the lives of the children in our community by educating them to even university and college levels and at the same time nurturing their talents.
