Regenerative agriculture enterprise, Sugata, supports the development of more sustainable, traceable, and ethical supply chains of fermented cocoa beans, which benefit farmers, consumers, and the environment.
Cocoa supply chains face significant challenges, including limited farmer knowledge of sustainable and climate-smart agricultural practices, insufficient involvement of women in decision-making, low youth participation in farming, and a lack of carbon baseline data to support regenerative and low-carbon farming efforts.
Sugata equips field agents with the skills to coach farmers on agronomy and business planning and establishes agroforestry demonstration plots to showcase regenerative practices. It is also developing carbon baseline data to reduce emissions, and exploring cocoa waste recycling to generate additional income streams for farmers.
With the support of TRANSFORM, Sugata is implementing the Sustainable Landscape Program, which promotes climate-resilient economic development in the Leuser Ecosystem in Northern Sumatra - a region home to many farmers who depend on its water supply for their livelihoods. The Program will help integrate smallholder farmers into sustainable value chains, enhance their livelihoods, while addressing key challenges such as biodiversity loss and deforestation.
As part of its commitment to gender inclusion, Sugata is also providing Gender Action Learning System (GALS) training to support women with skills in cocoa production.
